Sedan, Kansas, founded in 1870-1871 and incorporated in 1876, is the county seat of Chautauqua County, named by settler Thomas Scurr after his hometown in France. Known for its historic charm and as the birthplace of famous circus clown Emmett Kelly, the town was established during the post-Civil War expansion, growing around early agricultural and business development.
